Description
Chang Fee Ming’s painting presents an evocative still life, rich in texture and atmosphere. A weathered green birdcage hangs against a mottled, sun-dappled wall, its intricate weave and delicate shadows suggesting years of quiet presence. A richly patterned batik cloth in vibrant blue and gold cascades casually, adding warmth and cultural depth to the scene. Through this quiet corner, Chang captures the soul of Southeast Asian domestic life - intimate, storied, and timeless.
Acclaimed contemporary watercolorist, Chang Fee Ming is renowned for his vivid portrayals of Southeast Asian life, particularly scenes of villagers adorned in richly patterned batik cloth. Though his oeuvre has expanded to encompass travel narratives across Asia, he continues to return to the subjects he renders most elegantly: traditional textiles, local architecture, and everyday moments. Among his many accolades are the Malaysian Watercolour Society Awards (1984, 1985), Bakat Muda Sezaman Minor Awards (1986, 1987), and the prestigious ASEAN Gold and Overall Prize in the Sime Darby Art Asia Competition (1985).
