Venerable Bo Yuan (伯圆长老)
b. China, 1914 - 2009
Description
Venerable Bo Yuan’s painting is a serene and graceful depiction of plum blossoms rendered in ink. The delicate white blossoms emerge from bold, expressive brushstrokes of the tree’s branches, capturing the quiet strength and resilience of nature.
Venerable Bo Yuan, originally named Li Defu from Fujian, China, was deeply immersed in calligraphy and Buddhist studies from a young age, eventually becoming a monk under the guidance of Venerable Jin Sheng and receiving full ordination from Venerable Xu Yun. His exposure to ancient inscriptions and literati culture at Mount Gu deeply shaped his mastery of calligraphy and ink painting. In 1947, he was appointed abbot of Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang and later founded Hubin Jingshe in Kuala Lumpur, where he continued to propagate the Dharma and contribute to the arts. Known for his powerful yet refined stele-script style, his works evoke spiritual clarity and have been widely collected and exhibited, including a solo show at the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. Venerable Bo Yuan was also a respected advisor in cultural and social spheres, dedicating his life to spiritual practice, artistic creation, and public service.
