Description In "Pertarungan; Gelut", two pesilat are shown engaged in combat at the edge of a sparring ring. One strikes with a clenched fist, which is blocked by the other. The similarity in their facial features and body forms suggests that the two figures are not different individuals, but representations of the same person. This reflects one of Amron Omar’s central themes: the internal conflict between good and evil, portrayed through silat combat. Since the 1980s, Amron’s paintings have consistently focused on silat, a martial art rooted in Malay cultural tradition, and he himself is a silat master.

The title Pertarungan has been used for several of his early works that explore the theme of silat. In those earlier pieces, the faces of the pesilat and their opponents are often obscured to direct attention to the dynamism and energy found in silat movements. However, this powerful painting presents a more realistic portrayal of silat. The faces of both fighters are clearly depicted, along with their dramatically rendered bodily movements.
