Art Description
SC Shekar took this photograph in 2017, moving quietly through the mangroves of Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, Langkawi.
Shekar reminisces:
“At first glance, it is simply water, limestone, forest and morning light. But after a lifetime of photographing Malaysia’s forests, rivers and communities, I have learnt that a landscape is rarely just a landscape.
The mangroves of Kilim are living ecosystems—nurseries for marine life, habitat for wildlife and a natural defense for the coastline. Much of what sustains them, however, remains hidden beneath the surface.
What drew me to this image was the interplay between darkness and light: what we can see, and what remains unseen. It became a reminder that conservation is not simply about protecting what is beautiful, but understanding the intricate relationships that allow these landscapes to survive.
I photographed this place because it was beautiful. I return to images like this because beauty alone is no longer enough. A photograph can become a record of what existed, what survives, and what we choose to protect.”
