Art Description
Two Bornean elephant sisters stand together in a sanctuary along Sabah’s Lower Kinabatangan River, a vital refuge in a landscape increasingly surrounded by palm oil plantations.
Captured in a fleeting moment, the sisters appear to lean into one another in a tender embrace. So unusual was the scene that some initially thought the photograph had been digitally altered. In reality, it was a rare moment made possible by fortunate timing, angle and patience.
The image offers a glimpse into the deep family bonds of these intelligent and social animals.
Found only in Sabah and parts of neighbouring North Kalimantan, about 1,500 Bornean elephants remain in Sabah. As their habitat becomes increasingly fragmented, protecting the spaces they need to survive is critical.
WWF-Malaysia works with local communities and palm oil companies to create wildlife corridors, helping elephants move safely between forest habitats while reducing human-elephant conflict.
More than a beautiful image, this photograph is a reminder of why these precious wild spaces must be protected.
